During ultrasound examination, the silhouette of the fetus is visible, the movements of the fetus are visible, but the image is black and white and non-spatial. 3D ultrasound is the creation of spatial images of the fetus, based on the reaction of ultrasound waves to different fetal tissues. A color image is obtained, the parts of the fetal body and organs are clearly visible. Unfortunately, this method cannot monitor fetal movement. The 4D ultrasound used in our clinic uses 3D frames to show fetal movements. The computer of the ultrasound machine combines the images into a single clip, allowing you to see the moving fetus.

Is 4D ultrasound safe?

Thirty years of research have shown that ultrasound waves do not harm the fetus. During 3D and 4D ultrasound, waves of exactly the same strength are used as during a regular, 2D examination. The ultrasound machine used in our clinic is manufactured according to international standards and meets global health requirements.

The best time for 4D-Live fetal ultrasound

For pregnant women undergoing only one examination, the recommended time for 4D ultrasound is 24-32 weeks of pregnancy. For overweight patients, we recommend that 4D ultrasound be performed at 28-32 weeks of pregnancy. Keep in mind that at the end of pregnancy, the fetus is very bent, which makes it difficult to see its face.

What can you expect to see?

The results are different in each case. Unlike 2D ultrasound, you will be able to see the face, lips, eyes, and nose of the future baby up close. If the fetus is sleeping during the ultrasound, you will not see many movements, but you can often see various fetal movements: thumb sucking, arm or leg movements, mouth movements .

How can the quality of the ultrasound examination be improved?

The simplest way to improve the quality of the ultrasound examination images is to drink plenty of water 2-3 days before the examination. A large amount of water in the body makes the amniotic fluid clearer, which means there is less interference with the propagation of ultrasound waves, and a more accurate image is obtained.

Why do some people get better quality images, while others do not get images that are so accurate?
Clear images mainly depend on two things: the behavior of the fetus and the thickness of the mother’s tissues. Sometimes the fetus covers its face with its hands or presses it against the uterine wall. This position of the fetus does not allow for good pictures of the fetus’s face. If the mother’s tissues are very dense or the amniotic fluid is very dark, the clarity of the images may vary. We can remove these blurs with a computer, but the overall image quality will be worse than under optimal conditions.

Is it necessary to make an appointment in advance for a 4D ultrasound?

Our clinic offers a 4D ultrasound examination.
